Aerosol Cans When containers still have product in them or are still under pressure, most are considered hazardous waste and should be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center. If they contained food-related products or are empty, they should be disposed of in the garbage.
Agricultural Plastic
Agricultural plastic cannot be recycled; please dispose of it in the garbage. Burning agricultural plastic is illegal. Burning plastic releases toxic chemicals into the air.
Air Conditioners Disposal is available to all Rush County residents at the annual County Clean-up Day. You can also contact the Rush County Highway Garage at 765-932-2926 as the Dept. may accept them from time to time. There may be a disposal fee.
Alkaline Batteries (Duracell, Eveready, Energizer, etc.)
These are not hazardous, and may be disposed of in the garbage. Look for the pine tree symbol on alkaline batteries.
All-Purpose Cleaner
This is a hazardous material in its concentrated form. Dilute and use or bring to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Aluminum Cans
Accepted with Rushville City curbside recycling or deposited in the recycling bins at Perkins and Water Streets in Rushville. Please rinse out any remaining liquid or food from the cans.
Aluminum Siding
Aluminum siding can be recycled at most metal recycling businesses. Do not put in recycling bins.
Ammonia This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Ammunition
Contact Rush County Sheriff's Department at 765-932-2931 or Rushville Police Department at 765-932-3907 for proper disposal. Either department will usually accept unwanted ammunition and weapons.
Answering Machines These may be brought to eScrap collection events where electronics are accepted for recycling. (Check with the District office 765-938-1342 for the next scheduled event).
Antifreeze
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center. There is a receptacle for antifreeze just inside the entrance to the landfill --CGS Services, Inc, 11380 N. County Rd 300, Morristown, IN. There is no charge.
Ant Poison This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Appliances (sometimes referred to as 'white goods')
Air Conditioner, Dehumidifier, Dishwasher, Dryer, Freezer, Hot Tub, Microwave, Refrigerator, Stove, Trash Compactor, Washer, Water Heater
Disposal is available to all Rush County residents at the annual County Clean-up Day. You can also contact the Rush County Highway Garage at 765-932-2926 as the Dept. may accept them from time to time. There may be a disposal fee.
Area Rugs First, if there is any wear left in the rug, consider finding someone who could use it. Avoiding the landfill is generally a good thing. If not, disposal is available to all Rushville residents during designated spring and fall clean up weeks. Contact the Street Department for exact dates at 765-932-2725. District residents outside of Rushville should contact their trash hauler. Most pick up large items at least once every six months for their customers without additianl cost if you call to schedule a pick-up. Residents can also take such items directly to the landfill where there may be a disposal fee.
Arm Chair Same as area rugs above.
Art & Hobby Paint
If the paint can be cleaned up with water, let it dry out and dispose of in regular trash. If paint thinners or solvents are necessary for clean up, then this is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Arts & Crafts Supplies
Check with your local schools or Sunday school classes to find out if they are interested in a donation of used or leftover art supplies in good condition. Items not suitable for donation will either be garbage (for instance, a worn-out paintbrush) or household hazardous waste (some paints and dyes are toxic). Hazardous materials must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Asbestos
There are disposal restrictions for some types of asbestos. Call the Rush County Solid Waste District at 765-938-1342 or email us at recycle@rushcounty.in.gov
Aseptic Containers (juice boxes, soy milk boxes)
Put in regular trash.
Ashes Ashes are not recyclable, but may be placed in the garbage once they are stone cold!
Asphalt

Engine Degreaser

Motor Oil This is a hazardous material and must have proper disposal. Take to the Rushville Street Dept. garage at 706 East 9th St. or in the used oil container located at the Rush County Highway Dept, east drive between two round-roofed sheds. Don't leave any filters or containers. Large quantities of used motor oil can be used by the Highway Dept. Call 932-2926 to schedule a drop off time. There is also a container just inside the entrance gate of CGS landfill west of Morristown. There is no charge.
Radiator Flusher
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Transmission Fluid This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Auto Glass
Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Bags Paper: Accepted with curbside recycling and the Paper Only container at the recycling area at Perkins & Water Streets in Rushville. Plastic: Check with local supermarkets for recycling programs. They can be reused (for instance, as trash liners for small trash bins); They can be placed in curbside recycling or in the co-mingled containers at the recycling area. Bakeware (cookie trays, baking pans, Pyrex) If still in good condition, bakeware may be donated to local resale shops (such as Goodwill) or rummage sales, or offered at a tag sale. Bakeware in any condition is unfortunately not recyclable.
Ballast (from fluorescent light)
This is a hazardous material (mercury) and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center .
Barbecue Grill
This belongs in the heavy trash pickup or landfill.
Barbecue Tank
Disposal of small LP tanks are available to all District residents at the the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Bathroom Cleaner
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Bathtub, Cast-Iron or other metal
Contact a metal recycler or place for heavy trash pickup. There are also salvage companies that will buy certain styles.
Bathtub, Fiberglass or plastic
This belongs in the heavy trash pickup.
Batteries Alkaline (Household AAA, AA, C, D,9-volt, etc) These are not hazardous, and may be disposed of in the garbage. Some manufacturers place a pine tree symbol on those that can be trashed.
Automobile
Automobile batteries are a hazardous material and must be brought to the the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center. These batteries should be exchanged when buying a replacement. Some auto parts stores will accept these lead acid batteries.
Button

These batteries are typically found in digital cameras and laptop computers. They are a hazardous material. They can be recycled in the Call2Recycle boxes (there is a box inside the south door at the Courthouse, at Radio Shack, and at Wal-Mart). Rechargeable (NiCad)
NiCad batteries are a hazardous material. They can be recycled in the Call2Recycle boxes (there is one inside the south door at the Courthouse, at Radio Shack, and at Wal-Mart). the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Sealed Lead Acid
Small sealed lead acid batteries found in computers , electronic equipment and children's toys can be recycled in the Call2Recycle boxes. (There is one inside the south door at the Courthouse, at Radio Shack, and at Wal-Mart). The may also be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Zinc Batteries These are not hazardous, and may be disposed of in the garbage.

Boilers

Bookcase
Consider finding someone who could use it, advertise it on the local radio station's Time to Trade, put it in a yard sale, Goodwill, etc. Avoiding the landfill is generally a good thing. Cooking oil, glass (clear, green & brown), laundry detergent, plastic bottles that contained shampoo, soap, soda, water can be recycled (look for recycing symbol on bottom of container with number 1 or 2 inside the triangle. Branches (trees and bushes)
Rushville residents can place at curbside for the Street Department to pick up.
Bricks
Bricks are considered a bulky waste item and go in the landfill or for someone wanting clean fill items. In good condition, brinks are often used by landscapers and gardeners. Set out with a sign offering them to someone who needs them.
Broken Glass Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. This includes mirrors, too. This type of glass is tempered and not recyclable.
Brown Envelopes Place with curbside recycling or in the 'Paper Only' container in the recycling area at Perkins & Water Streets.
Brush (weeds, branches, sticks, bushes) Rushville residents can place at curbside for the Street Department to pick up.
Bubble Wrap
If you know someone who does a lot of selling on eBay he or she may be glad to take it for reuse. Otherwise, it is not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage if you are not going to reuse it yourself.
Buckets Metal buckets and Plastic buckets: Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.
Bug Spray
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Building & Remodeling and Construction Materials
Construction & Demolition Debris
Asphalt, Asphalt Shingles, Bricks, Cement, Cinder Blocks, Clapboard, Concrete, Doors, Flooring, Insulation, Lumber, Mortar, Plaster, Plywood, Roofing, Sheetrock, Shingles, Tiles, Windows, and Wood all belong in the landfill. Unfortunately, no one in this area at this time is reycling contruction and demolition debris. Some building materials in good, re-usable condition may be donated to Habitat for Humanity.
Polyurethane, Stains, Paint, and other Floor & Deck Finishes (oil-based only) These are hazardous materials and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.
Roofing Tar, Oil-based Asphalt Sealer These are hazardous materials and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center.

Canning Jars
Canning jars are not recyclable because of the thickness of the glass. Reuse is best. Give to a friend who can use them, put in a tag sale, or place in the garbage.
Cans (Steel [tin-coated] and Aluminum)

The following types of cardboard are not recyclable: beer or soda cartons (because of the moisture barrier in the cardboard); egg cartons (because the paper fibers are too short to be recycled); pizza boxes (because of grease); and waxed cardboard (because of the coating).
Cardboard Tubes from Paper Towel and Toilet Paper Rolls Place with curbside recycling or in the 'Paper Only' container in the recycling area at Perkins & Water Streets.
Carpeting & Rugs (Area Rugs, Carpet with or without padding) Heavy trash pick-up item or disposal in landfill.
Cassette Tapes and Cassette Tape Boxes These cannot be recycled locally. www.GreenDisk.com offers a mail-in option for recycling all forms of electronic media and their cases: diskettes, zip disks, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs et al, video tape, audio tape, game cartridges, DAT, DLT, Beta or Digibeta, and virtually all other type of computer tapes, as well as many other forms of "techno-trash." Oh, there is one more option: District office has instructions on crocheting an evening bag with the tapes. Yes, seriously.
Catalogs & Magazines Place with curbside recycling or in the 'Paper Only' container in the recycling area at Perkins & Water Streets. Plastic wrappers, if any, must be removed and placed in the trash; plastic wrappers are not recyclable. (Paper magazine wrappers can be recycled.)
CCA-Treated Wood (pressure-treated) CCA-treated wood should only be disposed of in a lined landfill, not an incinerator. Do not dispose of CCA-treated wood in a backyard compost pile, brush pile, chipping pile, or burn pile.
CDs and CD Trays
These cannot be recycled locally. GreenDisk offers a mail-in option for recycling all forms of electronic media and their cases: diskettes, zip disks, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs et al, video tape, audio tape, game cartridges, DAT, DLT, Beta or Digibeta, and virtually all other type of computer tapes, as well as many other forms of "techno-trash." Disposal is available for residents of Rushville. Call the Street Department specific information and dates.

Cleaners
All-Purpose Cleaner, Ammonia, Bathroom Cleaner, Chlorine Bleach, Disinfectant, Drain Cleaner, Oven Cleaner, Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Upholstery Cleaner, Septic Tank Cleaner--All of these products are considered Household Hazardous Waste and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center. It is important not to pour these chemicals down the drain all at once in their undiluted form because they have been known to have adverse effects in septic systems and at wastewater treatment plants. They can also contaminate groundwater and drinking water. It is unsafe to dispose of them in the garbage because they can be harmful to sanitation workers.

Clothing Charitable organizations (Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches) often take usable clothing. Clothing that is not appropriate for reuse (torn, stained) can be used as rags.
Coal Ash Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage after it is cold.

Metal and Plastic: Unfortunately not recyclable, and must be placed in the garbage if no longer usable.
Colored Glass Bottles
Place with curbside recycling or in the containers in the recycling area at Perkins & Water Streets. Please remove caps and rinse bottles before recycling.
Compact Disks and Compact Disk Trays These cannot be recycled locally. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Compact fluorescents cannot be placed in the trash because they contain a small amount of mercury. They must be brought to the Smiley Avenue Living Greener Center (when it opens late summer 2008).
Computer Disks
Computer disks cannot be recycled in Rush County. You can either throw them in the trash or arrange to recycle them through GreenDisk. GreenDisk accepts for recycling a wide range of "technotrash," including diskettes, and all forms of electronic media and cases. There is a fee for the service.
Computer Monitors Placing computer monitors in the trash is not a good idea as there is up to ten pounds of lead in a monitor plus other hazardous metals. For proper recycling, bring to eScrap Collection event. Check with District office for the schedule. There may be a small cost.
Computer Peripherals (including speakers) Printers should be recycled when possible (see above). Keyboards, mice, track balls, and speakers can be recycled so drop off at eScrap Collection event. Call District for next event date.
Computers (CPUs) Computer (CPUs) circuitry contain heavy metals and should not be thrown in the trash. They can be recycled so drop off at eScrap Collection event. Call District for next event date.

CRTs & TVs Placing CRTs and TVs in the trash is not a good idea. They contain and lead and other toxic metals. Bring to next eScrap collection. Call District office for next scheduled date at 765-938-1342. There may be a small charge.
Cups Cups -- whether paper, plastic, styrofoam, or china -- are not recyclable.

Envelopes Even with stamps and plastic windows, envelopes are accepted. Place with curbside recycling or in the 'Paper Only' container in the recycling area at Perkins & Water Streets. Manila envelopes are recyclable. Tyvek envelopes are not recyclable.

Eyeglasses
Dr. Fenimore has a box in his lobby to collect eyewear and sends them to charitable organizations accept eyeglasses. Otherwise, they are unfortunately not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

Furniture Bookcases, Box Springs, Bureaus, Cabinets, Couchs, End Tables, Kitchen/Dining Tables, Futons, Loveseats, Mattresses (standard or waterbed), Over-stuffed Chairs, Upholstered Chairs, Wooden Furniture all need to be sold or given away if still usable. If not these are heavy trash pick-up items or taken to land fill. Some contract haulers will take when a scheduled pick-up is arranged.

Glass Since glass does not degrade, a bottle thrown in a landfill today would still be around in the year 3000. That's why it's so important to recycle any glass food or beverage container. In addition to saving landfill space, recycling saves energy. For example, recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours. Any clear, green, or brown glass bottle which held a food or beverage and is smaller than 2 gallons can be recycled. Empty and rinse; discard caps in trash. Labels and neck rings are okay, as they can be sorted out at the recycling facility.
There are other glass items that unfortunately cannot be recycled.

Glass Bottles Accepted at recycling area at Water & Perkins Streets in Rushville or with curbside recycling. Caps and corks go in the trash. Labels and neck rings can be left on.
Grass Clippings Grass clippings are banned from trash in Rush County. They may be left on the lawn after the grass is cut or added to compost. Rushville residents can place marked containers of grass clippings and yard waste to be picked up and composted by Street Department.
Grease Automotive grease: This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the Clean Green Rush Tox-Away Center. Cooking grease should be placed in the garbage.
